Rotating Bitget API Keys on a Schedule: A Routine for Long-Running Bots

Guides · 2026-10-10

An API key created a year ago for a bot that still runs today has had a year of opportunities to leak: through a compromised server, a careless backup, a former collaborator or a tool provider's breach. Rotating keys regularly limits how long any single leak can be exploited. Many people avoid rotation because they fear breaking a working setup. This guide offers a simple routine for rotating Bitget API keys without downtime and with clear records of what changed.

Choosing a rotation interval

Pick an interval that matches how sensitive the key is. Keys with trading permission on accounts holding meaningful balances deserve shorter intervals than read-only keys for portfolio trackers. Many users choose every few months for trading keys. Note any expiry rules Bitget applies to keys without IP restrictions, and rotate before those deadlines rather than discovering a silent failure in the middle of a market move, when a stopped bot can leave positions unmanaged.

Creating the replacement first

Create the new key with the same minimal permissions and IP restrictions as the old one, never more. Label it with the tool name and the creation date. Resist the temptation to add extra permissions just because you are already in the settings screen. Update the tool or bot configuration with the new key and confirm it works by checking that the bot can read balances or place a test order as expected.

Retiring the old key

Only after the new key is confirmed working, delete the old one in API management. Check the tool again to ensure nothing still relies on the deleted key. If a tool stops working, the problem is confined to configuration rather than security. Keep the bot's own logs to confirm activity resumed with the new key. If the tool supports several keys at once, a short overlap period makes the switch even smoother.

Recording each rotation

Keep a short log with the tool name, old key label, new key label, date, permissions and IP restriction. This record helps if you ever need to investigate unusual activity, and it reminds you when the next rotation is due. Use the rotation as a chance to remove keys for tools you no longer use at all. Set a calendar reminder for the next rotation as soon as you finish the current one.
